Applying for WIC in Alabama

Alabama WIC does not have a statewide online application. To apply, you must contact your local county health department WIC clinic to schedule a certification appointment. WIC services are available through county health departments across all 67 Alabama counties.

Step 1: Find Your Local WIC Clinic and Call

  • Visit alabamapublichealth.gov/wic and use the county health department locator to find the WIC clinic nearest you.
  • Call the statewide WIC line at 1-888-942-4673 to be connected to the agency closest to your location.
  • Mobile and Jefferson County residents: Contact your local WIC clinic directly for appointment instructions โ€” these counties have their own scheduling processes separate from the statewide line.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

Bring the following to your certification appointment:

  • Proof of identity for the parent or caretaker AND for the person applying for WIC โ€” a driver's license, birth certificate, or hospital birth card for infants
  • Proof of Alabama residency โ€” a document with your street address such as a lease, utility bill, or official mail at your current address
  • Proof of income โ€” pay stubs or income documentation for everyone working in the household during the past month. If your household receives Medicaid, SNAP, or Family Assistance (Alabama's TANF program), bring that enrollment documentation instead โ€” it replaces income proof entirely.
  • The person applying for WIC must be present at the appointment โ€” this includes you, the infant, and any children being certified

Step 3: Your Certification Appointment

At the appointment, a WIC health professional will verify your documents, evaluate you or your child for nutritional risk (a federal requirement for WIC enrollment that includes height, weight, and sometimes a hemoglobin blood check), determine your food package, and issue your eWIC card with your first benefit period loaded. Make sure the parent or guardian attends the first eWIC visit โ€” you will set your PIN and learn how to use the card at that appointment. If your eWIC card is ever lost, stolen, or damaged, call eWIC Customer Service at 1-855-279-0683 or visit WicConnect.com to manage your account.

Enrolling a Newborn If You Were Already on WIC During Pregnancy

If you were enrolled in Alabama WIC while pregnant, you do not need to bring your newborn into the clinic for initial enrollment. ADPH provides a downloadable newborn enrollment form on its WIC apply page โ€” complete the form and email it along with required proof documents to the address listed on the form. Your baby can be enrolled remotely. If you were not on WIC during pregnancy, standard in-person enrollment applies. Mobile and Jefferson County participants should call their local WIC clinic for specific instructions.

Recertification

Pregnant women are certified through pregnancy and six months postpartum (twelve months if breastfeeding). Infants are recertified around six months and approaching their first birthday. Children are certified every six to twelve months until age five. Each monthly benefit period has a specific end date โ€” benefits unused by midnight on that date expire and do not roll over. Contact your county health department WIC clinic before your certification period ends to avoid a gap in benefits.

Application FAQ โ€” Alabama WIC

No. Alabama does not have a statewide online WIC application. To apply, call your local county health department WIC clinic or the statewide WIC line at 1-888-942-4673 to schedule a certification appointment. One exception: if you were already enrolled in WIC during pregnancy, you can enroll your newborn remotely by submitting a downloadable form and proof documents by email โ€” find the form on the ADPH WIC apply page at alabamapublichealth.gov/wic/apply.html.

Bring proof of identity for the parent or caretaker AND for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, or hospital birth card for infants), proof of Alabama residency with your street address (utility bill, lease, or official mail โ€” no PO boxes), and proof of income for everyone working in the household during the past month. If your household receives Medicaid, SNAP, or Family Assistance, bring that enrollment documentation instead โ€” it replaces income proof. The person applying for WIC must be present at the appointment.

If you were enrolled in Alabama WIC during your pregnancy, you can enroll your newborn remotely without a clinic visit. Download the newborn enrollment form from the ADPH WIC apply page at alabamapublichealth.gov/wic/apply.html, complete it, and email it along with the required proof documents to the address listed on the form. If you were not on WIC during pregnancy, you will need to follow the standard in-person enrollment process. Mobile and Jefferson County participants should call their local WIC clinic for specific newborn enrollment instructions.

At your first eWIC visit, the parent or guardian must be present in person. You will receive your family's eWIC card, set your PIN, and receive instructions on how to use the card at authorized grocery stores. Plan to allow extra time for this visit. If your eWIC card is ever lost, stolen, or damaged, call eWIC Customer Service at 1-855-279-0683 or visit WicConnect.com to report the card and manage your account.

Certification periods vary by participant type: pregnant women are certified through pregnancy and six months postpartum (twelve months if breastfeeding); infants are recertified around six months and again approaching their first birthday; children are recertified every six to twelve months until their fifth birthday. Each monthly benefit period expires at midnight on its end date โ€” unused benefits do not roll over. Contact your county health department WIC clinic before your certification period ends to schedule a renewal appointment and avoid a lapse in benefits.
