Applying for WIC in Delaware
Delaware WIC offers an online pre-application through the state's ASSIST benefits portal. After submitting, WIC staff will follow up to schedule your certification appointment. You can also apply by calling your county WIC office directly at (302) 283-7540. Benefits are typically issued the same day as your certification appointment if you are found eligible.
Step 1: Apply Online or Call Your County Office
Start your application online through Delaware's ASSIST benefits portal at assist.dhss.delaware.gov โ the same portal used for Medicaid, SNAP, and TANF applications. After submitting, WIC staff will contact you to schedule your certification appointment. You can also call (302) 283-7540 โ all Delaware WIC clinics share this number.
- New Castle County: nccwic@delaware.gov
- Kent County: kentwic@delaware.gov
- Sussex County: sussexwic@delaware.gov
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
Bring the following to your certification appointment:
- Proof of identity for each person applying โ photo ID, driver's license, birth certificate, school ID, passport, military ID, or Delaware Medicaid card
- For infants and children: birth certificate, foster care or adoption papers, Delaware Medicaid card, or immunization records
- Proof of Delaware residency โ utility bill, rent receipt, lease agreement, or envelope mailed to you at your current address
- Proof of income for all household members who earn income โ two most recent pay stubs, employer letter, unemployment check stub, workman's compensation or Social Security statement, Military LES, or 1040 if self-employed. Income documentation is not required if your household is enrolled in Delaware Medicaid, the Food Supplement Program (FSP/SNAP), TANF, or General Assistance โ bring proof of that enrollment instead.
You do not need to be a U.S. citizen or have a Social Security number to apply.
Step 3: Attend Your Certification Appointment
Appointments are required at most Delaware WIC clinics. Some locations offer walk-in hours โ call (302) 283-7540 before visiting to confirm. At your appointment, a WIC nutritionist will review your income, residency, and identification, then conduct a nutritional risk assessment including height, weight, and a blood test for hemoglobin. You will receive personalized nutrition counseling.
Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card
If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the Delaware WIC Shopping App (iOS and Android) to scan UPC codes and confirm WIC eligibility before you check out. Log in to the WIC Client Portal at wicclientportal.dhss.delaware.gov to manage future appointments and check your benefit balance. Ask your WIC nutritionist about Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and FMNP farmers' market vouchers if applicable.
