Applying for WIC in Georgia

Georgia offers an online WIC application through the Georgia Gateway website at gateway.ga.gov. After you complete the application, your county WIC clinic will contact you to schedule a Nutrition Assessment appointment. You can also take a quick eligibility assessment first at dph.georgia.gov/wic-eligibility-assessment to check whether you likely qualify before starting the full application.

Additional ways to get started:

  • Call 1-800-228-9173 to speak with Georgia WIC directly
  • Visit your local county health department WIC office in person
  • Download the Georgia WIC Mobile App (iOS and Android) to manage benefits and appointments

Before Your Appointment

Some Georgia districts allow you to submit documents by email or complete forms online before your appointment. Check with your local district WIC office about what you can do ahead of time. For your appointment, bring:

  • Photo ID for every family member applying โ€” driver's license, passport, birth certificate, or other government-issued ID
  • Proof of Georgia address โ€” utility bill, lease, or recent mail with your name and address
  • Proof of income โ€” pay stubs, employer letter, or tax return for all working adults in the household. If your household receives Medicaid, TANF, or Food Assistance (SNAP), bring that enrollment documentation instead
  • For infants and children โ€” birth certificate or hospital record
  • For pregnant women โ€” documentation of pregnancy from a healthcare provider if available

What Happens at Your Nutrition Assessment

At your Georgia WIC Nutrition Assessment appointment, staff will conduct a health screening that includes body measurements (height and weight), a hemoglobin check, medical history review, and nutrition education. If approved, your Georgia eWIC card is loaded with food benefits. Georgia WIC makes referrals to dentists, childcare and preschool programs, doctors, and specialty health professionals โ€” let your WIC nutritionist know if you need help connecting to any of these services.

Virtual appointment options are available in some Georgia health districts โ€” contact your local district WIC office to find out what is available in your county.

Breastfeeding Support

Georgia WIC provides breastfeeding support through counselors, peer buddies, educational materials, and supplies. Many district WIC offices have staff who are Certified Lactation Counselors. Breast pumps are available through a loan program at each clinic site at no charge โ€” let your WIC staff know at your first appointment if you plan to breastfeed.

Online Nutrition Education

Georgia WIC participants can complete nutrition education requirements online through gawiconline.org, reducing the number of in-person clinic visits needed after initial certification.

Recertification in Georgia

Pregnant women can stay on WIC throughout pregnancy until six weeks postpartum. Postpartum non-breastfeeding women continue for up to six months. Breastfeeding women can remain for up to one year as long as they continue to breastfeed. Children must be reassessed every six months. Your clinic will notify you when reassessment is due.
