Applying for WIC in Hawaii
Hawaii WIC offers an online application as well as phone and in-person appointments. After submitting your application online, a WIC clinic staff member will follow up to schedule your certification appointment, which can be completed by phone or in person. Benefits are issued on the same day as your certification appointment if you are found eligible and have all required documents.
Step 1: Apply Online or Contact Your Local Clinic
Submit an application online at hiwic.org/apply. After submitting, a local WIC clinic staff member will contact you to schedule your certification appointment. You can also find clinic locations and contact a WIC clinic near you at health.hawaii.gov/wic/clinic-locations. If you need help finding services, call 2-1-1 (Aloha United Way) for referrals to WIC and other community services statewide.
If you receive SNAP benefits, you may also receive a direct referral from Hawaii WIC staff β check your phone, text, or email for outreach from a local WIC clinic.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
- Proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, state ID, birth certificate, passport, or hospital records for a newborn)
- Proof of Hawaii residency (utility bill, lease, bank statement, or addressed mail)
- One month's proof of income for all working household members β not required if enrolled in Med-QUEST, SNAP, or TANF
- Proof of Med-QUEST, SNAP, or TANF enrollment (if applicable β bring your Quest card or benefit notice)
Step 3: Attend Your Appointment β By Phone or In-Person
Your first WIC appointment takes approximately one hour. A WIC health professional will conduct a nutritional risk assessment including height, weight, and a blood test to check iron levels. Your health and diet history will be reviewed. WIC staff can schedule a translator for all appointments β interpreter services are available in multiple languages at no cost.
Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card and Benefits
If eligible, you will be issued an eWIC card loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the WICShopper app to view your benefits, find approved products, and locate authorized stores. Benefits expire monthly β plan your shopping accordingly. Ask your WIC clinic about the Breast Pump Program if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
Ongoing Appointments
WIC benefits require regular clinic contact, usually every 1β3 months, to receive ongoing benefits. Follow-up appointments can typically be done by phone. Recertification is required every 6 months β for pregnant and breastfeeding women, postpartum women, infants, and children until the child turns 5.
