Applying for WIC in Mississippi
Mississippi WIC offers both online and in-person application options. The MSDH page prominently promotes applying online from your phone or computer, making Mississippi one of the more accessible states for starting the WIC process digitally. Either way, a certification appointment at a local clinic is required to complete enrollment and receive your eWIC card.
Option 1: Apply Online
Visit msdh.ms.gov/wic and click the online application link. The application takes 15-20 minutes and allows you to upload photos or scanned images of required documents directly through the form.
Important: Partially completed applications cannot be saved. Gather all required documents before starting so you can complete the application in one session.
Option 2: Apply In Person
Apply at your local county health department or WIC clinic. Most Mississippi WIC clinics are located within county health departments. To make an appointment, call the WIC Call Center at 1-800-338-6747.
Required Documents
Whether applying online or in person, you will need:
- Proof of identity โ a valid U.S. passport, driver's license, state ID, birth certificate, social security card, military ID, or current shot record. For infants, a newborn crib card or hospital birth record is acceptable.
- Proof of Mississippi residence โ pieces of mail that include your current address, such as a current utility bill, bank statement, or mortgage/rental agreement. A valid driver's license with your current address is also accepted.
- Proof of income โ a current pay stub less than 60 days old, a signed employer statement of gross earnings, a current W-2 form, or an income tax return for the most recent year. If you receive TANF, SNAP (food stamps), or Medicaid, bring that enrollment documentation โ it automatically satisfies the income requirement and no additional income proof is needed.
Your Certification Appointment
At your appointment, a nurse or nutritionist will verify your documents, measure height and weight, check hemoglobin iron levels, and conduct a brief health and nutrition assessment to determine nutritional risk โ the federal requirement for WIC enrollment. If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card and first set of food benefits. You will also receive information about the WICShopper app and the Pacify app for free telelactation support.
Mississippi WIC provides free interpretation services for participants with limited English proficiency. If you need language assistance, call 1-800-545-6747 before your appointment to arrange services.
WIC Call Center
If you have trouble making an appointment or have questions about WIC or your benefits, the WIC Call Center can help. The WIC Call Center is listed prominently on the MSDH WIC client tools page โ call 1-800-338-6747. For general MSDH WIC program inquiries, call 1-800-545-6747 (outside Jackson) or (601) 991-6000.
Recertification
Pregnant women are certified through pregnancy and six months postpartum (twelve months if breastfeeding). Infants are recertified around six months and approaching their first birthday. Children are recertified every six to twelve months until their fifth birthday. Contact your local WIC clinic before your certification period ends to avoid a gap in benefits.
