Applying for WIC in New Jersey

New Jersey WIC offers an online Participant Portal to begin the application process, as well as the option to call your local WIC agency directly. After submitting the online pre-screening, a local WIC team member will contact you to schedule your certification appointment. All applicants in the family, including children, must be present at the in-person appointment.

Step 1: Apply Online or Contact Your Local Agency

Start your pre-screening and application at the NJ WIC Participant Portal: wic.nj.gov/participantportal. The process takes approximately 15 minutes and submits your information directly to the local agency serving your area. You can also call your local WIC agency or clinic office directly to schedule. Find your local agency at nj.gov/health/fhs/wic.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

  • Proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, or hospital records)
  • Proof of New Jersey residency (NJ driver's license, voter registration, state ID, utility bill, or lease)
  • Proof of income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, employer letter) โ€” not required if enrolled in NJ FamilyCare, SNAP, WFNJ/TANF, or WFNJ/GA
  • Proof of NJ FamilyCare, SNAP, or WFNJ enrollment (if applicable)
  • Children's Universal Child Health Record (UHCR) and vaccination records

Step 3: Attend Your In-Person Appointment โ€” All Family Members Required

All applicants in the family, including all children, must be present at the certification appointment. A WIC nutritionist will conduct a health assessment including height, weight, and a blood test for iron levels for each person applying. You will receive personalized nutrition education and a food prescription tailored to your family's needs. WIC staff can provide referrals to other health and social services in your community.

Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card

If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the WIC Shopper app and use its UPC scanning tool to confirm approved items while shopping. Ask your WIC nutritionist about FMNP farmers' market benefits, breastfeeding support resources, and the Families First Discovery Pass program for free cultural access.

NJ WIC Online โ€” Nutrition Education from Home

After enrolling, complete your required nutrition education at home via NJ WIC Online โ€” an interactive digital platform available in English and Spanish. Your WIC nutritionist will provide your login details at your first appointment.
