Applying for WIC in North Carolina

North Carolina WIC offers an online referral form at ncdhhs.gov/ncwicreferral to start the application process. After submitting, a WIC clinic will contact you to schedule your first appointment. You can also apply by phone or by looking up your county agency directly. Note: the MyNCWIC Portal is a management tool for enrolled participants only, not a new-applicant site.

  • Submit the NC WIC Referral Form online at ncdhhs.gov/ncwicreferral โ€” a WIC clinic will contact you within 20 calendar days
  • Call or text 1-844-601-6881 to reach your local WIC agency
  • Text your zip code to 1-844-601-6881 (format: wic + zip, for example wic27601) to find your nearest WIC office
  • Look up your county agency using the WIC County Directory at ncdhhs.gov/ncwic

Priority response times: Pregnant women, families with infants younger than six months, people experiencing homelessness, and migrant farmworkers are contacted within 10 calendar days of submitting a referral โ€” faster than the standard 20-day window.

Before Your Appointment

  • Proof of ID for all individuals applying for WIC
  • Proof of North Carolina residency โ€” utility bill, lease, or recent mail with your name and address
  • Proof of income for all household members with income โ€” pay stubs, employer letter, unemployment letter, or tax return. If you receive Medicaid, WFFA/TANF, or FNS/SNAP, bring that documentation instead โ€” no additional income proof needed
  • For infants and children โ€” birth certificate or hospital record. Each person applying must generally be present at the time of application

Your First Appointment

The first appointment is best done in person, but remote options may be available at your local WIC clinic. At your appointment, a nutritionist or other health professional will assess nutritional risk factors at no cost to you, review your eligibility, and issue your NC eWIC card if approved. Nutrition education is provided at every appointment.

MyNCWIC Portal โ€” After Enrollment

Once enrolled, create an account on the MyNCWIC Portal (myncwic.ncdhhs.gov) using an NCID account. The portal lets you manage WIC appointments and information, upload required documents, and complete some appointments by video conference instead of visiting the clinic in person. This significantly reduces the number of in-person trips needed after initial certification.

Recertification in North Carolina

Pregnant women are certified through delivery. Breastfeeding women are certified up to one year postpartum. Postpartum non-breastfeeding women are certified for six months. Children are certified periodically. Your local WIC clinic will notify you when recertification is due. Some recertification and follow-up appointments may be completed via video conference through the MyNCWIC Portal.

Transferring WIC Benefits To or From North Carolina
