Applying for WIC in North Dakota

North Dakota WIC does not have an online application. In-person enrollment at a WIC clinic is the only way to apply. Call your local clinic to schedule an appointment โ€” your first visit takes about 30โ€“45 minutes, and if you are eligible you will receive your eWIC food benefits the same day.

Step 1: Find Your Local Clinic

Find the WIC clinic serving your county at hhs.nd.gov/food-programs/WIC/apply, or use the national WIC prescreening tool at signupwic.com to locate a nearby clinic and check potential eligibility before your appointment. WIC is delivered through county health departments and district health units โ€” your local clinic is determined by your county of residence. Tribal residents on North Dakota reservations may also contact the tribal WIC program at their reservation if one operates there. Households enrolled in FDPIR on a North Dakota reservation are automatically income-eligible for WIC.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

  • Proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, tribal ID, or hospital records)
  • Proof of North Dakota residency (utility bill, lease, addressed mail, or driver's license with current address)
  • Proof of income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, employer letter) โ€” not required if enrolled in North Dakota Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR
  • Proof of Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR enrollment (if applicable)

Step 3: Attend Your In-Person Appointment

Your first appointment takes about 30โ€“45 minutes. WIC staff will verify your income, identity, and residency, then conduct a brief nutritional risk assessment including height, weight, a hemoglobin blood test for iron levels, and a review of your health and diet. You will receive personalized nutrition counseling. Ask about referrals for domestic violence support, substance use counseling, vaccines, health insurance, or other services if your family needs them.

Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card

If eligible, your eWIC card will be loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the WICShopper app to identify approved products and check your benefit balance at the store. Benefits can be used throughout the month as needed. Ask your WIC clinic about breastfeeding peer counselors, breastfeeding classes, and seasonal Farmers' Market Nutrition Program vouchers.

Recertification

WIC certification is not permanent โ€” participants must recertify periodically to remain enrolled. Standard recertification intervals in North Dakota follow federal WIC guidelines:

  • Pregnant women: certified through 6 months postpartum; extended to 12 months postpartum if breastfeeding
  • Infants: certified at enrollment, recertified at approximately 6 months of age, and again near the first birthday when transitioning to the child participant category
  • Children: recertified every 6 months from age 1 until age 5

Bring the same types of documents to your recertification appointment as you did to your initial enrollment. Recertification appointments are shorter than the first visit. Your WIC clinic will notify you when your certification period is approaching expiration.

Application FAQ โ€” North Dakota WIC

No. North Dakota HHS states that applying at the WIC clinic in person is the only way to apply. You can prescreen your potential eligibility and find the clinic serving your county at signupwic.com or at hhs.nd.gov/food-programs/WIC/apply.

Bring proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, tribal ID, or hospital records), proof of North Dakota residency (utility bill, lease, or addressed mail), and proof of income from the last 30 days. Income documentation is not required if your household is enrolled in North Dakota Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR โ€” bring proof of that enrollment instead.

Your first appointment takes about 30โ€“45 minutes. WIC staff will verify your eligibility documents, conduct a nutritional risk assessment (height, weight, iron blood test, and diet review), and provide nutrition counseling. If you are eligible and have all your documents, you will receive your eWIC card with benefits loaded the same day.

Yes. Contact a North Dakota WIC clinic with your out-of-state WIC certification documents. WIC staff will verify your existing certification and issue North Dakota benefits. Visit hhs.nd.gov/food-programs/WIC/apply to find the clinic serving your county.

Yes. North Dakota WIC welcomes all parents and caregivers. Fathers, grandparents, stepparents, foster parents, and any other legal caregiver can apply for WIC on behalf of an eligible child under age 5 in their care. The child must meet the income and nutritional risk requirements regardless of who is applying.
