Step-by-Step Guide
Rhode Island WIC Agency
Applying for WIC in Rhode Island
Rhode Island WIC does not have an online application. To apply, call your nearest WIC clinic to schedule an appointment. Rhode Island WIC is administered directly by RIDOH โ contact any WIC clinic statewide to find a convenient appointment time.
Step 1: Find a Clinic and Call
Find the full list of Rhode Island WIC clinic locations at health.ri.gov/women-infants-and-children, or call the RIDOH Health Information Line at (401) 222-5960. You can also use the WIC Shopper App to find nearby WIC clinics.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
- Proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, or other government-issued ID)
- Proof of Rhode Island residency (utility bill, lease, addressed mail, or a self-statement if other documentation is unavailable)
- Proof of income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, employer letter, or self-statement of income) โ not required if enrolled in RIte Care, Medicaid, SNAP, or Rhode Island Works
- Proof of RIte Care, Medicaid, SNAP, or Rhode Island Works enrollment (if applicable)
Step 3: Attend Your Appointment
At your first WIC appointment, staff will verify your income, residency, and identification, then conduct a nutritional risk assessment including height, weight, and a hemoglobin blood test for iron levels. You will receive personalized nutrition counseling and a food prescription tailored to your family's needs.
Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card
If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the free WIC Shopper App to find approved products, check your real-time benefit balance, and view your appointment information. Ask your WIC clinic about FMNP farmers' market benefits (available June through October) and, if you are breastfeeding, about the availability of a free hospital-grade electric breast pump.
Ongoing Appointments and Recertification
Regular WIC appointments are required to continue receiving benefits. Recertification intervals depend on your participation category: pregnant women are certified through the postpartum period; breastfeeding women can participate through their child's first birthday; children participate through age five with periodic recertification appointments. Your WIC clinic will notify you when recertification is due. To reschedule or ask questions, call (401) 222-5960.
