Applying for WIC in South Carolina
South Carolina WIC offers several ways to start the application process โ online, by phone, or by walking into a local WIC clinic. The program is available through health departments and WIC clinics across all 46 counties, and appointments can be completed in person or over the phone.
Step 1: Apply Online or Call
- Online pre-application: Create a secure account at apps.dhec.sc.gov/Health/WIC to submit your pre-screen information and upload required documents before your appointment. After submitting, a WIC staff member will contact you to schedule your certification appointment.
- Call: Dial 1-855-472-3432 to reach the South Carolina WIC line and schedule an appointment by phone.
- Walk in: Many South Carolina WIC clinic locations maintain walk-in hours โ no appointment needed. Call your local health department or clinic to confirm current walk-in availability in your area.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
Bring the following to your appointment, or upload them in advance through the online portal:
- Proof of identity for yourself and each person applying โ a driver's license, birth certificate, passport, military ID, or hospital records for infants
- Proof of South Carolina residency โ a utility bill, lease agreement, official mail, or other document showing your current address
- Proof of income โ pay stubs from the last 30 days, employer letters, or benefit documentation. If you receive Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, bring that enrollment card or letter โ it replaces income documentation entirely.
- For children applying: the child must be present at the first appointment for height, weight, and hemoglobin measurements
- For pregnant applicants: documentation of pregnancy from a healthcare provider
Step 3: Your Certification Appointment
At your appointment โ in person or by phone โ a WIC health professional will verify your documents, conduct a health and nutrition assessment (including height, weight, and a hemoglobin blood check for anemia), determine your food package, and issue your eWIC card with your first month of benefits. You will also receive information about the South Carolina WIC App, your local WIC clinic contacts, and โ if you are in a participating county โ how to enroll in the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program.
South Carolina WIC also offers telehealth services for breastfeeding support, high-risk nutrition assessment, and high-risk nutrition care planning through its integrated telehealth platform. These services are available via video chat, phone, or text through your WIC clinic.
Voter Registration
Under the National Voter Registration Act, South Carolina WIC clinics serve as voter registration assistance sites. Voter registration forms are available at every WIC clinic location, and participants can also register to vote online at scvotes.gov.
Recertification
Pregnant women are certified through pregnancy and six months postpartum (twelve months if breastfeeding). Infants are recertified around six months and approaching their first birthday. Children are recertified every six to twelve months until age five. Follow-up appointments โ required every two to three months โ include nutrition education, which may be completed online or in person. Contact your local WIC clinic before your certification period ends to avoid a lapse in benefits.
