Applying for WIC in South Dakota
South Dakota WIC offers online eligibility screening through the myWIC Portal, as well as the option to call your local WIC or Community Health Services office directly. After applying online or calling, WIC staff will schedule your in-person certification appointment. Benefits are issued the same day as your certification appointment if you are found eligible.
Step 1: Apply Online or Call Your Local Office
Visit the myWIC Portal to complete the online eligibility check and create an account, or visit sd.gov/wic to find your nearest WIC clinic and call directly to schedule.
Note for tribal members: The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (605-964-3947), the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe each operate their own separate WIC programs. Tribal members may enroll through their tribal WIC program or the state DOH program. Families receiving FDPIR benefits are automatically eligible for WIC.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
- Proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, or passport)
- Proof of South Dakota residency (utility bill, lease, or addressed mail)
- Proof of income for the past 28 to 31 days (pay stubs, employer letter, or most recent federal income tax return for the self-employed) โ not required if enrolled in South Dakota Medicaid (with an approved aid code), SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR
- Proof of Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR enrollment if applying under adjunctive eligibility
Step 3: Attend Your Certification Appointment
Your first appointment involves a brief nutritional risk assessment including height, weight, and a hemoglobin blood test for iron levels. You will receive personalized nutrition counseling from a WIC nutritionist or dietitian. South Dakota employs nurses, nutrition educators, and registered dietitians across its clinic network to provide individualized support.
Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card
If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the WICShopper app to identify approved products, check your balance, and find authorized stores near you. Ask your WIC clinic about the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program and seasonal Farmers' Market Nutrition Program vouchers.
Recertification in South Dakota
WIC certifications must be renewed before they expire. South Dakota follows the federal standard certification schedule:
- Pregnant women: certified through 6 weeks postpartum, or up to 12 months if fully breastfeeding
- Postpartum women not breastfeeding: certified for up to 6 months after delivery
- Breastfeeding women: certified through the infant's first birthday
- Infants: recertified around 6 months of age, then again approaching the first birthday
- Children ages 1โ4: recertified every 6 months until age 5
Your WIC clinic will notify you when your certification is approaching expiration. Bring updated income documentation โ or proof of adjunctive eligibility enrollment โ and current residency documentation to your recertification appointment.

Both options are available. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (605-964-3947), the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe each operate their own WIC programs for tribal members and nearby communities. You may choose whichever program is most convenient. Families receiving FDPIR benefits are automatically eligible for WIC at any program that serves them.

WIC staff will review your documents, conduct a nutritional risk assessment including height, weight, and a blood test for iron levels, and provide nutrition counseling.
