Applying for WIC in West Virginia
West Virginia WIC offers both an online pre-application and in-person clinic appointments. All participants must complete an in-person certification appointment for the health screening, but the online form allows you to get started and have a clinic follow up with you.
Step 1: Apply Online or Find a Clinic
Submit the online pre-application at wvwichousehold.wvdhhr.org. After submitting, a WIC clinic staff member will contact you to schedule your appointment. Alternatively, use the clinic locator at dhhr.wv.gov/WIC to find your local office and call directly.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
- Photo ID or proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, hospital records)
- Proof of West Virginia residency (utility bill, lease, or addressed mail)
- Proof of income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, employer letter) โ not required if enrolled in West Virginia Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF (WV WORKS)
- Proof of Medicaid, SNAP, or WV WORKS enrollment (if applicable)
- Proof of pregnancy (if pregnant and not visibly so)
Step 3: Attend Your In-Person Certification Appointment
Your appointment will take approximately one hour. A WIC health professional will conduct a nutritional risk assessment, including height and weight measurements and a blood test to check iron levels. Your diet and health history will be reviewed. Contact your local clinic to ask about available appointment times, as hours vary by location.
Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card and Benefits
If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card loaded with your first month's food benefits. Download the WICShopper app or WIC Smart app to identify approved products at the store and manage your benefits.
Recertification
Certification periods vary by participant category. Pregnant women are certified through delivery and the postpartum period. Breastfeeding women remain covered through their infant's first birthday. Children are recertified annually until their fifth birthday. WIC will contact you when your recertification is approaching โ keep your contact information current with your clinic to avoid a gap in benefits.
