Applying for WIC in Kansas

Kansas WIC offers an online pre-application tool and in-person appointments at local WIC agencies across all 102 Kansas counties. Most local WIC clinics operate within county health departments and are open by appointment.

Step 1: Use the Online Pre-Application or Call

  • Online pre-application: Visit the Kansas WIC Pre-Application Portal to submit your information online. A local WIC agency will contact you to schedule your certification appointment. Do not use the online pre-application if you are transferring from another state โ€” call your local WIC office directly instead so staff can process your VOC transfer correctly.
  • Call or visit: Contact your local county health department WIC clinic directly, or visit kdhe.ks.gov/1017/For-Families to find clinic contact information near you.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

Bring the following to your certification appointment:

  • Proof of identity for the adult โ€” a driver's license, state ID, passport, or other government-issued document
  • Proof of identity for each child applying โ€” a birth certificate, birth confirmation letter for newborns, KanCare card, social security card, foster care papers, or shot records
  • Proof of Kansas residency โ€” a rent receipt, recent mail, or utility bill from within the last 30 days at your current address
  • Proof of household income โ€” pay stubs from the last 30 days for all people working in the home, or income tax records for self-employed individuals. If you have a KanCare (Medicaid) card, SNAP approval letter, or benefit letter from the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF), bring that instead โ€” it satisfies the income requirement entirely.

Step 3: Your Certification Appointment

At your appointment, a WIC health professional will verify your documents, check height and weight, and may conduct a hemoglobin blood test to check iron levels. There will be a brief review of the foods you eat, your medical history, and current health status to determine medical or nutritional need โ€” the federal requirement for WIC enrollment. If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card and first set of food benefits, along with information about using the WIC Shopper App and accessing breastfeeding support.

Kansas WIC also offers immunization screening and referral at appointments โ€” staff will review children's immunization records and provide referrals to vaccination services if needed.

Recertification

Pregnant women are certified through pregnancy and six months postpartum (twelve months if breastfeeding). Infants are recertified around six months and approaching their first birthday. Children are recertified every six months until their fifth birthday. Contact your local WIC clinic before your certification period ends to schedule a renewal appointment and avoid a lapse in benefits.

Tribal Members and FDPIR

Tribal members of Kansas's four federally recognized nations โ€” the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska โ€” who meet WIC eligibility criteria apply through their local KDHE county health department WIC clinic. If you are interested in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) as an alternative or supplement to SNAP, contact your tribal office or the USDA Food and Nutrition Service for eligibility information.

Application FAQ โ€” Kansas WIC

No. KDHE specifically states that if you are transferring to Kansas WIC from another state, you should not fill out the online pre-application. Instead, call your local Kansas WIC office directly so staff can connect you with the correct local agency and process your Verification of Certification (VOC) transfer. This ensures your certification period and benefits transfer correctly without delays.

Bring proof of identity for yourself (driver's license, state ID, or passport), proof of identity for each child applying (birth certificate, birth confirmation letter, KanCare card, social security card, foster care papers, or shot records), proof of Kansas residency (rent receipt, recent mail, or utility bill from the last 30 days), and proof of income (pay stubs from the last 30 days for all working household members, or income tax records for self-employed). If you have a KanCare (Medicaid) card, SNAP approval letter, or benefit letter from the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF), bring that instead โ€” it satisfies the income requirement entirely.

Plan for 45 minutes to one hour for your first certification appointment. Staff will verify documents, check height and weight, may conduct a hemoglobin blood test, review your eating habits and medical history, determine nutritional need, and issue your eWIC card. You will also receive nutrition education and information about available breastfeeding support resources at your clinic.

Ask your current Kansas WIC clinic for a Verification of Certification (VOC) document before you leave. Bring it to a WIC clinic in your new state to continue benefits without a full recertification from scratch. Your Kansas eWIC card will not work at stores outside of Kansas โ€” contact your new local WIC clinic as soon as possible after your move.
