Applying for WIC in Maine

Maine WIC offers an online contact form to request an appointment, as well as direct phone access to local agencies. After submitting the online form or calling, a WIC staff member will contact you to schedule your first appointment. Benefits are issued the same day if you are found eligible and bring all required documents.

Step 1: Submit the Online Form or Call Your Local Agency

Submit an appointment request at maine.gov/wic contact form โ€” a WIC staff member will call you to schedule your first appointment. You can also call your local WIC agency directly or reach the statewide line at 1-800-437-9300. Find your nearest clinic at maine.gov/wic.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

  • Proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, or immunization records)
  • Proof of Maine residency (utility bill, lease, or addressed mail with a Maine address)
  • Proof of income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, employer letter) โ€” not required if enrolled in MaineCare, SNAP, or TANF
  • Proof of MaineCare, SNAP, or TANF enrollment (if applicable)

Check maine.gov/wic for Maine WIC's current application checklist to make sure you have everything ready before your appointment.

Step 3: Attend Your Appointment

Your first appointment takes approximately one hour. WIC staff will check your income, residency, and identification, then conduct a health assessment including height, weight, hemoglobin (iron) screening, and a brief review of your health history and diet. Nutrition education is provided at every appointment. WIC staff pride themselves on providing timely, nonjudgmental support. Free language interpretation is available โ€” contact your clinic in advance to arrange.

Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card and Set Up the Bnft App

If eligible, you will receive your eWIC card loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the WICShopper app to identify approved foods at grocery stores. To use your fruit and vegetable benefits at Maine farms and farmers' markets, also download the Bnft app or visit mybnft.com to set up your account and generate a barcode โ€” farmers cannot accept the eWIC card directly.

Ongoing Support

Regular WIC appointments are required to continue receiving benefits. Follow-up nutrition appointments can often be completed by phone. Your WIC office will advise you on the recertification schedule, which varies by participant category. Ask your WIC nutritionist about breast or chest pump availability and FMNP summer benefits at your first visit.
