Applying for WIC in Michigan

Michigan offers an online WIC application through MI Bridges. You can find a WIC clinic near you at michigan.gov/mdhhs. After completing your application or finding a clinic, you'll schedule a certification appointment. You can also call 2-1-1 to be connected to WIC services anywhere in Michigan โ€” 2-1-1 is Michigan's statewide social services helpline and can connect you directly to your local WIC agency.

Before Your Appointment

  • ID for every family member applying โ€” driver's license, passport, birth certificate, or other government-issued ID
  • Proof of Michigan address โ€” utility bill, lease, or recent mail with your name and address
  • Proof of income โ€” recent pay stubs or other income documentation for all household members. If your household receives Medicaid, Food Assistance Program (FAP), or TANF, bring that enrollment documentation instead
  • For infants and children โ€” birth certificate or hospital record
  • For pregnant individuals โ€” documentation of pregnancy from a healthcare provider if available

Telehealth Appointment Options

Michigan WIC offers telehealth video appointments that connect participants with Registered Dietitians and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) remotely. This is particularly valuable for participants in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, where the nearest WIC clinic may be a significant drive. Ask your local WIC agency whether telehealth appointments are available for your certification or nutrition education visits.

What Happens at Your Appointment

At your Michigan WIC certification appointment, a WIC health professional will review your documents, take height and weight measurements, conduct a blood test for iron levels, and assess nutritional risk. If approved, your Michigan WIC EBT card is loaded with food benefits. Benefit amounts vary by participant category โ€” ask your WIC clinic for current amounts.

Nutrition Education

Michigan WIC participants can complete some nutrition education requirements online through wichealth.org. Michigan State University Extension also offers nutrition education programs to families with infants and young children that complement WIC services โ€” ask your local WIC agency about MSU Extension resources in your county.

WIC Produce Connection

Once enrolled, ask your WIC clinic about the WIC Produce Connection program (formerly Project FRESH). This program provides additional benefits for locally grown Michigan fruits and vegetables from authorized growers and farmers markets, loaded directly onto your WIC EBT card. The program is seasonal โ€” visit michigan.gov/mdhhs for current dates and the authorized grower list.

Recertification in Michigan

Pregnant participants are certified through delivery. Breastfeeding participants are certified up to one year postpartum. Postpartum non-breastfeeding participants are certified for six months. Children are certified annually. Your local WIC agency will notify you when recertification is due.

Moving To or From Michigan

Moving to Michigan? Contact a local Michigan WIC agency with your Verification of Certification (VOC) form from your previous state. Moving out of Michigan? Contact your local clinic or call 1-800-942-1636 to obtain a VOC form before you leave. Your Michigan WIC EBT card only works at authorized vendors within Michigan.
