Applying for WIC in New Hampshire

New Hampshire WIC offers an online pre-application as well as phone and in-person appointments. After submitting the online pre-application or calling, your local WIC contractor will follow up to schedule your certification appointment. Benefits are issued on the same day if you are found eligible and bring all required documents.

Step 1: Apply Online or Call

Submit the online pre-application at nhwic.com/preapplicationportal. The tool collects your household names, address, and language needs, and lets you select the town and clinic you prefer โ€” WIC staff will then call you to schedule your appointment. You can also call the state WIC line at 1-800-942-4321 or contact your local contractor directly.

Important: If you are transferring from another state's WIC program, do not use the online pre-application. Call the state WIC office at 1-800-942-4321 so staff can connect you with your local agency and process your transfer properly.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

  • Photo ID for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, or passport)
  • Proof of New Hampshire residency (utility bill, lease, addressed mail, or rent receipt)
  • Proof of income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, employer letter) โ€” not required if enrolled in NH Medicaid, SNAP, or FANF/TANF
  • Proof of Medicaid, SNAP, or FANF enrollment (if applicable)

Step 3: Attend Your Appointment

Appointments are available in-person or by phone at many NH WIC clinic locations. A WIC nutritionist will weigh and measure each person applying, conduct a brief blood test for anemia (hemoglobin screening), and discuss your family's health and nutrition goals. If your household uses a private well, you may be offered a free water testing kit through the Water Well-ness Initiative. For children, WIC staff will also complete a brief developmental milestone screening using CDC checklists.

Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card

If eligible, your eWIC card will be loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Download the WICShopper app to view your benefits, find approved products, and locate authorized stores. Ask your nutritionist about Farmers' Market Nutrition Program benefits if you live in Hillsborough or Rockingham county.

Ongoing Support

All NH WIC clinics have certified lactation counselors and peer counselors available for breastfeeding support, including after-hours phone and text support. Nutritionists use motivational interviewing to support personalized nutrition goals at every visit. WIC certifications run for a set period based on your category: pregnant women are certified through delivery and the postpartum period; breastfeeding women may remain eligible up to 12 months after their infant's birth; non-breastfeeding postpartum women are eligible through 6 months postpartum; infants are recertified at around 6 months and again approaching their first birthday; and children are recertified every 6 months until age 5.

Application FAQ โ€” New Hampshire WIC

Yes. NH WIC has an online pre-application at nhwic.com/preapplicationportal. The tool collects your household information and preferred clinic, and a WIC staff member will call you to schedule your certification appointment. Note: if you are transferring from another state, do not use the online pre-application โ€” call 1-800-942-4321 instead so staff can process your transfer directly.

Bring photo ID for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, or passport), proof of New Hampshire residency (utility bill, lease, or addressed mail), and proof of income from the last 30 days. Income documentation is not required if your household is enrolled in NH Medicaid, SNAP, or FANF/TANF โ€” bring proof of that enrollment instead.

Yes. Many NH WIC clinics offer phone appointments, particularly for follow-up nutrition education visits. New Hampshire WIC began accepting phone applications during the COVID-19 pandemic and has maintained this flexibility. Contact your local WIC contractor to ask about available appointment formats.

If you are currently certified for WIC in another state, call the NH WIC state line at 1-800-942-4321 rather than using the online pre-application. Staff will connect you with the appropriate local agency for your county, who can verify your out-of-state certification and issue NH WIC benefits.

NH WIC is served by four contractors: Community Action Program (Belknap, Coos, Grafton, Merrimack counties), Goodwin Community Health (Carroll, Strafford counties), Southern New Hampshire Services (Hillsborough, Rockingham counties), and Southwestern Community Services (Cheshire, Sullivan counties). Call 1-800-942-4321 or visit dhhs.nh.gov/wic to find the specific clinic locations in your county.
