Applying for WIC in Idaho

Idaho WIC does not have an online application. To apply, you must contact your local public health district WIC clinic by phone to schedule a certification appointment. Many districts offer phone or in-person appointments. Benefits are issued the same day as your certification appointment if you are found eligible and have all required documents.

Step 1: Find Your Local WIC Clinic and Call

Contact your local Idaho public health district WIC office to schedule an appointment. Idaho WIC is served by seven public health districts โ€” your clinic will be determined by your county of residence. Use the IDHW WIC clinic finder or call the Idaho CareLine at 2-1-1 to find the clinic serving your county.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

  • Photo ID for each person applying (driver's license, passport, birth certificate, or social security card)
  • Proof of Idaho residency (utility bill, addressed mail, or rent/mortgage receipt with street address)
  • Proof of household income for the last 30 days (pay stubs, employer letter) โ€” not required if enrolled in Idaho Medicaid, SNAP, TAFI, or FDPIR
  • Proof of Medicaid, SNAP, TAFI, or FDPIR enrollment (if applicable)

Many Idaho WIC districts accept documents uploaded securely via the Teletask online system before your appointment โ€” check with your local clinic to submit documents in advance and reduce appointment time.

Step 3: Attend Your Certification Appointment

Your first appointment takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour and can be conducted in-person or by phone at many districts. A WIC health professional will conduct a nutritional risk assessment including height, weight, and a finger-stick blood test for iron levels for older infants, children, and women. Your health history and diet will be reviewed. Nutrition education is provided at every appointment.

Step 4: Receive Your eWIC Card

If eligible, your eWIC card will be issued and loaded with your first month's food benefits the same day. Set your four-digit PIN before your first shopping trip. Download the WICShopper app to check your balance, find approved products, and locate authorized stores. Benefits load on the first of each month โ€” unused benefits expire at month end and do not roll over.

Recertification

After certification, follow-up nutrition education appointments are typically scheduled every three months and can often be completed by phone. Recertification is required to continue receiving benefits: pregnant women are certified through their pregnancy and the postpartum period; breastfeeding women through up to 12 months postpartum; and children every 6 months until age 5.
