Applying for WIC in New Mexico

Applying for New Mexico WIC begins with requesting an appointment online or by calling your nearest clinic. All applicants must attend an in-person clinic visit for certification, which includes a brief health screening. Benefits are issued the same day if eligible.

Step 1: Request an Appointment

Submit an appointment request online at nmwic.org/request-an-appointment. After submitting the form, a WIC clinic staff member will call you within 7 business days. If you need an immediate appointment, use the clinic locator at nmwic.org/locations to call your nearest clinic directly.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

  • Photo ID or proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, immunization record, etc.)
  • Proof of New Mexico residency (utility bill, lease agreement, or addressed mail)
  • Proof of income for the past 30 days (pay stubs, employer statement) โ€” not required if you have Centennial Care, SNAP, NMWorks, or FDPIR
  • Proof of Centennial Care (Medicaid), SNAP, NMWorks (TANF), or FDPIR enrollment, if applicable
  • Your previous WIC EBT card if your family has previously received WIC benefits
  • Each person applying for WIC must attend the appointment in person

Step 3: Attend Your Clinic Appointment

At the WIC clinic, a health professional will conduct a brief health screening including height/weight measurements and a blood test to check iron levels. A nutritional risk assessment will also be completed. New Mexico has more than 60 WIC clinic locations statewide, including clinics at military installations (White Sands Missile Range, Holloman AFB, Kirtland AFB, and Cannon AFB) and locations serving rural and border communities including Luna County (Columbus area).

Step 4: Receive Your Benefits

If eligible, you will be certified the same day and receive your WIC EBT card loaded with your first month's food benefits. Certification periods are typically 6 months for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and every 6 months for children until age 5. Download the myWIC app to manage appointments, view benefits, and use the shopping guide at the store.

Automatic Referrals from Other Programs

If you recently applied for or were approved for Centennial Care (Medicaid), SNAP, or NMWorks (TANF), you may receive a Notice of Case Action that includes a referral to WIC. A WIC clinic will contact you โ€” no separate application is needed. Native American families may be offered enrollment through a Tribal WIC agency.

Application FAQ โ€” New Mexico WIC

Submit an online appointment request at nmwic.org/request-an-appointment. A WIC clinic staff member will call you within 7 business days to schedule your appointment. If you need an appointment sooner, use the clinic locator at nmwic.org/locations to contact your nearest clinic directly.

Bring photo ID or proof of identity for each person applying (driver's license, birth certificate, or immunization record), proof of New Mexico residency (utility bill, lease, or addressed mail), and proof of income from the last 30 days. If your household is enrolled in Centennial Care (Medicaid), SNAP, NMWorks (TANF), or FDPIR, bring proof of that enrollment instead of income documents. All persons applying must attend the appointment in person.

You may not need to apply separately. New Mexico has an automatic referral system that identifies SNAP, Centennial Care (Medicaid), and NMWorks (TANF) recipients who appear WIC-eligible and sends their information to a WIC clinic. A WIC staff member will contact you. If you haven't been contacted and believe you qualify, you can also apply directly through the appointment request form on nmwic.org.

If you are currently certified for WIC in another state, you can transfer your benefits to New Mexico. Contact a New Mexico WIC clinic with your out-of-state WIC information and they will verify your certification and issue a new New Mexico WIC card. Transferring participants should contact a clinic directly rather than using the online appointment request form, as transfer certifications require verification of your existing benefits.

If you bring all required documents and are found eligible, New Mexico WIC issues benefits the same day as your certification appointment. Your WIC EBT card will be loaded with your first month's food benefits before you leave the clinic. Download the myWIC app afterward to view your benefits, track purchases, and use the shopping guide.
